Erik Karlsson, Jamie Benn, Jonathan Tavares and Matt Duchene
The 2009-2010 NHL Panini stickers collection was marketed mainly in North America. Panini released the product a few months into the 2009-2010 NHL season with pictures of players in their current 2009-10 uniforms, which included newly drafted players John Tavares and Victor Hedman. The North America distributor was Prince Wholesalers (princewholesalers.com). They just sold the cases, you had to order missing stickers directly from www.paninigroup.com in Italy. They strictly enforce the rule that you cannot order more than one of each sticker that you need to a maximum of 40 missing stickers total. This set of 364 stickers was “card size” just like in 2008-09. This was a breakthrough year for NHL Panini stickers as instead of making the logos as the foils in the set, they decided to make a foil sticker of the “Franchise Player” from each of the 30 teams instead. The 30 team logo stickers were also improved as they included that team’s retired numbers with the logo. In another year of firsts, Panini made an amazing Rookie sub-set of 30 that included some of the best young players in the game. Some of the most sought after stickers in this set are the foils of Sidney Crosby, Mike Richards, Jonathan Toews and Anze Kopitar and the Rookie sticker of John Tavares, James van Riemsdyk and Matt Duchene. Sticker distribution across each box was not good. Considering that you get 250 stickers in a box and there are 364 in a set, it is disapointing when you pull 4 of one sticker from the same box. It should be noted that in opening 2 cases of these stickers, the stickers numbered 1-10 (NHL, NHLPA, Western Conference, Eastern Conference and Division Champions Stickers) were by far the hardest to pull. With a guess based strictly based on comparing the frequency of stickers #1-10 being pulled versus others, it is apparent that stickers #1-10 were short printed.
The size of each full sticker is 8 cm X 6 cm (3.45 in X 2.4 in). There were 50 packages in each wax box which originally retailed for $.89 a pack. Each package contained 5 stickers. The minimum number of packages needed to make a full set (assuming absolutely no doubles) is 73. The original album ($1.49 USD) cover featured Sidney Crosby, Henrik Lundqvist, Alexander Ovechkin, Duncan Keith, Luke Schenn, Henrik Zetterberg, Andrei Markov and Roberto Luongo. The Stanley Cup winners were the Pittsburgh Penguins with Evgeni Malkin winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoffs MVP.
This year marked the 100 year anniversary of the Montreal Canadiens and the 91st NHL season. By comparison, the Oilers marked their 30th year in the league. The salary cap for this season is 56.7 million US dollard per team. The Winter Classic was played on January 1st 2009 when the Red Wings travelled to Chicago to play the Blackhawks. The Phoenix Coyotes are found to be in severe financial peril and are given money by the league in order to get through the current NHL season. Zdeno Chara won his 1st career Norris Trophy as the league’s top defenseman. Tim Thomas won his 1st career Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goalie. Steve Mason won the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year for the Columbus Blue Jackets.
